How to Change Your Driving Test Centre
You change centre through the same GOV.UK change service, but since 9 June 2026 a booked test can only move to one of the three centres nearest to where it is booked, or back to the centre you originally booked. New bookings can still be made at any centre — the restriction only applies once a test exists.
What the centre restriction means
The rule was introduced to stop slots being booked in quiet areas and then moved into busy ones. It works like this:
- When booking a new test you can choose any centre in Great Britain, exactly as before.
- When changing an existing booking made from 9 June 2026, the service only offers the three centres nearest to the centre where your test is currently booked, plus the centre you first booked on that booking.
- A centre move counts as one of your two changes, alone or combined with a new date or time in the same session.
If the centre you actually want is outside that list, the booking cannot be moved there. Your options are to keep the current centre or to cancel and book a new test at the centre you want, subject to the usual 10 working day refund rule.
Choosing between your allowed centres
- Familiarity beats statistics. Centre pass rates differ mostly because of the roads and the candidates, not easier examiners. A centre whose roads you have practised on is usually the better pick.
- Road types matter. Some centres feed straight onto dual carriageways or large roundabouts; others are dominated by tight urban streets and parked-car meets. Choose the environment you handle best, then practise it.
- Journey on the day. Pick somewhere you can reach calmly with time to spare. Arriving stressed is a bad start.

Northern Ireland is different
The three-nearest-centres rule applies to car tests in England, Scotland and Wales. Tests in Northern Ireland are run by the DVA through nidirect with its own booking system — see our Northern Ireland guide.

Can I move my test to a centre in another city?
Only if that centre is one of the three nearest to your currently booked centre, or the centre you originally booked. Otherwise you would need to cancel and make a new booking at the centre you want.
