What Happens If You Miss Your Driving Test
Miss your test — or arrive too late, or without your licence, or with a non-compliant car — and the test does not happen and the fee is normally lost. If a serious documented emergency caused it, contact DVSA promptly with evidence; otherwise the way forward is simply to book a new test.
What counts as missing the test
- Not turning up, for any reason.
- Arriving late — examiners run a tight schedule and even a few minutes can mean the test is refused.
- Arriving unable to test: without your provisional licence photocard, failing the eyesight check, or with a car that breaks the vehicle rules. Our test day checklist exists to prevent exactly these.
In each case the outcome is the same: the booking is spent and the fee is not refunded.
If an emergency caused it
DVSA's refund discretion for late cancellations centres on serious documented reasons — and the strongest position is always to cancel before the slot, even minutes before, rather than silently no-show. If a genuine emergency (sudden illness, an accident on the way, bereavement) stopped you attending, contact DVSA as soon as possible afterwards, explain, and provide evidence. Book a new test
There is no penalty wait after a missed test — book as soon as you are ready via the booking guide. The new booking has its own two changes.
Remove the cause
Whatever went wrong — travel margin, documents, the car — fix it in your plan for the new date. The checklist covers the common failure points.
Frequently asked questions
Is missing a test the same as cancelling late?
Financially yes — the fee is lost either way inside the window. But cancelling, even at the last minute, frees the slot for someone else and looks far better on any refund application.
Do I have to wait before booking again after a no-show?
No. The 10 working day gap only applies after a failed test, not a missed one.
